A Look At Office Workstation Options

Posted on

An office workstation is where the magic happens. You do all your important work here, so it is important to get the right workstation for your business. There are many options for workstations, and here are some features to help you narrow it down to the perfect set up for you and your workspace.

Individual vs. Linked

One of the biggest differences in workstations is between individual workstations or linked workstations. An individual workstation is a unit itself that can be placed independently anywhere in the office. A linked workstation is a composite of multiple workstations where two or more people have an individual space within the larger workstation. There are pros and cons to each kind of workstation. An individual workstation offers more privacy and personalization and is much more mobile, but it takes up a lot of space and could cost more if you are buying multiple units. A linked workstation is space and cost-efficient, but bulky and harder to position.

Wall vs. Freestanding

Another option to look at is wall dependent workstations or freestanding workstations. A wall-dependent workstation faces a wall and is usually mounted to the wall. This kind of workspace has the advantage of fewer distractions, and you can fit more workstations in a room by using the space along the walls. A freestanding workstation is set away from the wall and into the middle of the room. A freestanding workstation offers more engagement in the office and promotes better teamwork.

Open vs. Cubical vs. In-between

There are a few options when it comes to how open you want your workstations. An open workstation has no walls or borders and is open to other workers' spaces, allowing a more open feeling in the workplace. A cubical is a walled workstation where the desk is surrounded by two or three walls to give more privacy and encourage greater focus on tasks. The third option is in-between an open workstation and a cubical; these workstations usually have a small barrier that allows in natural light but still provides some privacy.

Materials

When choosing a workstation, you might be concerned with what the station is made of. Workstations come in many materials. Some are made primarily of wood. These can be beautiful and long-lasting, depending on the quality, but they can also be expensive. Another option is plastic, which can also be durable and is more affordable and less likely to stain or scratch. Another option is glass and metal, which can give a workplace a slick and modern feel.
